TOGETHER, Under The Sun
Commissioned by Rotherham Museums
Film created by Andrew Carroll at 1979films
This project was motivated to incorporate under represented community groups in Rotherham to be a part of an on site art installation taking place at Keppel’s Column. Commissioned by Rotherham Museums, the inspiration for this project followed from Emma’s fascination with ancient gathering which celebrated astronomical events to mark seasonal change. The final artwork is a culmination of the creative expressions contributed by the four groups involved in the project and the artists interests around community spirit.
The installation took place during the summer solstice and coincided with a public opening of Keppel’s Column for tours after its recent renovation. The installation is a testament to the collective spirit of the four groups involved and stands as a symbol of unity, expression, and the importance of togetherness and inclusivity within our communities.
Keppel’s Column resonates locally with Rotherham as an icon for the town’s heritage. With the recent development of the site inspiring a new interest in it’s history, we took the background of its creation as a starting point for the workshops. This created a chance for the groups to think about what their mark on the landscape might be. After hearing about the background of the column’s build and heritage, the participants were then asked what they would create if they had unlimited possibilities! These artworks would then be taken and embedded into acrylic panels that would form part of the installation. Being inside the installation and looking out onto the landscape, you would then see your artwork sat on the landscape in front of you.
This is the result of the four groups who were involved in the project and contributed their creative expressions for the final event and installation!
Artworks created from the creative sessions with community groups in Rotherham
Photos taken during the artwork creation workshops, the participants used acrylic paint pens, glass paints and layers of acetate to create their own artworks to be displayed on the stained resin panels.
