Commutes & Cats | 2016

This project comes from a series of commutes and a series of encounters with a neighbour cat that i have filmed over 2 months. The video comes from an interest in the mundane and the everyday, and how video is used to feel comfort and amusement, such as within the context of memes or youtube culture. The two subjects that i took out of my main activities during the week (apart from being at university and being at work) were driving to and from work and university and also being around the neighbour cats. For me, these are both very normal things and don’t have any connotations of being ‘out there’ or ‘planting a message’. Because of this, the video functions in the same way as the youtube video culture, providing short segments of entertainment. This entertainment is also specialised within everyday life so that it’s easily accessible and relatable, making it easy to understand and therefore humour with.
