Commission for Wakefield Council

With the brief to provide a 2D digital image as a representative of the artists work, I decided to create a new artwork which incorporated my current practice and captured it digitally. The artwork was then to be displayed on the exterior hoarding of WX, the Wakefield Exchange, whilst it undergoes a refurbishment, turning it into an events and art centre.

Working with oven hardened clay, I created small scale standing stone-esque structures that are representative of my larger scale sculptural installations. I then created tiny 1-2cm tall blob like creatures which are recurring characters in my work, I call them The Foramen. They are very curious beings who like to take in their surroundings, observe and learn about new environments.

I wanted to create a new environment for them and so made a backdrop for the sculptures using more traditional 2D methods such as watercolour, gouache and crayons. This was then laid upright, and I placed the sculptures on top, positioning them into a scene as if it could be a still of a stop motion animation. This was then photographed and then further added to with image editing software to produce graphic lines and blur the line between painting, sculpture and digital image.
